Information wants to be free. This has never been taken more seriously than at MIT. They have begun a process of posting all of their course infomation on the web in a project called OpenCourseWare. They finished a beta project this last year with under 100 courses posted to the web, but they plan to add more every year, with their entire catalog posted to the web by 2007. The information includes lectures notes, assignments, and even quiz and exam reviews. You will be able to audit a full degree at MIT for absolutely free. The project is heavily funded through endowments, and could change the way online education is taught.
